12 - Playoffs-
vs Independence
/Page |
The
Franklin Rebel Ice Hockey team entered the playoffs with the last seed
and after a heartbreaking loss in overtime in the first round, the team
moved into the losers bracket and faced a strong Independence team.
While Franklin played well in the first two periods, out shooting the
Eagles 13-9, they were unable to get anything past Independence goalie
James Griessel. Independence managed one goal per period and after
two periods led 2-0.
The
third period found the Rebels taking some chances that they might not
normally have taken and Independence capitalized by scoring 3 more
goals. Franklin managed another 10 shots on Griessel, but none got
by him and the game ended with a 5-0 win for Independence.
This
was the last game in a Franklin uniform for seniors Tanner DeVries,
Jared “Tree” Radestock, and team captain Evan Marroni. Also
junior Ville Parkkinen will be returning to Finland thus he played his
last game for Franklin as well. All four played well all season,
provided great leadership to a young team, and we wish them luck in
their future.
All
that is left now is the annual Varsity/Alumni game and the season ending
party. More news on those events coming soon.
Great
job this year Rebels and we look forward to more success in 2007/2008!

7 - Playoffs - vs BGA |
In a
game that saw 4 lead changes, numerous scoring opportunities for both
teams, great goaltending on both sides, and a few penalties thrown in
for good measure, the Franklin Rebels lost a heart breaking first round
playoff game in overtime to BGA on Wednesday, February 7th. The
12th seeded Rebels entered the playoffs as a distinct underdog against
the 5th seeded team from BGA. However, Franklin played with energy
all night and definitely had their chances to win the contest.
BGA
opened the scoring to take a 1-0 lead but Franklin responded with a
power play goal with 1:49 left in the 1st period to tie the game up.
Dan Francis was in his assigned position in front of the net and knocked
home a rebound from a shot by Brian Carrick. Ville Parkkinen was
credited with the other assist on the goal. Evan Marroni was
shadowed all night by a BGA player, but broke loose to score another
power play goal with 5 minutes left in the 2nd period and the Rebels
went up 2-1. Defenseman Robert Crockett got an assist along with
Parkkinen. BGA would respond with a power play goal of their own
to tie it up as time was winding down in the period and after two the
score was tied 2-2. The 3rd period began with a goal less than
minute into the period by BGA and they were back on top 3-2. BGA
controlled most of the play in the 3rd period but with 5 minutes to go
defenseman Kyle Grider got the puck at the blue line and sent a slap
shot on goal. Dan Francis was there again to reach out and
redirect the puck out of midair and past the helpless BGA net minder.
Regulation time ran out with the score tied 3-3.
Overtime
began well for the Rebels as they controlled the puck for the first
shift. Unfortunately, with just over 2 minutes left in the 5
minute overtime, BGA won a face off in the Franklin end and sent a low
hard shot on net from the point which managed to avoid several pairs of
arms and legs and found the back of the net.
Francis
was the offensive MVP with his two goals while playing with a cast on
his wrist. Goalie John Negley was the defensive MVP stopping 29 of
33 shots for the game.
The
next game for Franklin is Monday, February 12th, at 7:30 PM at the
Sportsplex in Nashville.

31 - Centennial
and
Feb 2nd LaVergne |
With
the Tennessee Titans playoff run serving as an example, the Franklin ice
hockey team came into the last week of the season needing some help and
needing to win the last 2 games of the season in order to make the
playoffs.
First
up was Centennial on Wednesday, January 31st. Centennial opened
the scoring 2 minutes into the contest. Franklin evened the score
2 minutes later as Evan Marroni scored with assists from Corey
Nightingale and Ville Parkkinen. Marroni would score again late in
the period on an assist from Parkkinen. Evan would then return the
favor by assisting on a goal by Ville and the period ended with Franklin
ahead 3-1. The teams played to a 2-2 draw in the second period.
Franklin scored on goals by Jordan Sabatini and Sam Miller.
Assisting were John McHugh, Jay Buchanan, and Parkkinen.
Centennial would score early in the third period to pull within 5-4 but
the Rebels added 2 more goals late in the period to put the game away.
Corey Nightingale scored the 6th goal and Evan Marroni completed a hat
trick with his 3rd goal of the night. Assists were by Brian
Carrick, Ville Parkkinen, and Nightingale. In addition to
Marroni’s hat trick, defenseman Ville Parkkinen had a 5 point night
with 1 goal and 4 assists. Goalie CJ Schipani earned his first
victory of the year and played great in stopping 28 of 32 shots.
Next
was La Vergne on Friday, February 2nd. Franklin needed to win and
also have Station Camp beat Brentwood in the game immediately before
theirs. Station Camp came through winning 4-3 in a nail biter.
Now all that was left was for the Rebels to come through as well.
Franklin came out and took care of business out shooting La Vergne 29-14
for the game and winning 5-0. Goalie John Negley recorded the shut
out stopping all 14 shots for the game. Goals were scored by Ryan
Beane, Dan Francis, Corey Nightingale, Jordan Sabatini, and John McHugh.
This game showed the balance of the scoring attack for Franklin as the
high scoring line of Corey Nightingale, Evan Marroni, and Brian Carrick
were limited to 1 goal. Freshmen contributed 5 points on the night
as Bean, Sabatini, and McHugh scored and Kyle Grider and Robert Crockett
added assists. Franklin also took time to honor their 3 seniors on
the team – Evan Marroni, Jared “Tree” Radestock, and Tanner
DeVries. Also honored was Ville Parkkinen who will be returning to
Finland after the season. Good luck to all as they move on to the
next stage in their lives.
With
the victory, Franklin claimed the last playoff spot for the GNASH
championship. They open the playoffs on Wednesday, February 7th at
7:30 PM at the Centennial Sportsplex in Nashville. Their opponent
will be the co-op team of BGA and Hume Fogg in a rematch of a game
played 3 weeks ago which BGA won by a score of 3-0.

19-22nd
BA,BGA &
Father Ryan |
The
Franklin Rebel ice hockey team has been very busy the past several days
playing 3 games in 4 days.
First
up was Brentwood Academy/Ezell Harding on Friday, January 19th.
The Rebels started out slowly being outshot in the 1st period 7-2 and
going down by the score of 1-0. BA/EH added another goal early in
the 2nd period for a 2-0 lead. Going down by two seemed to wake
the Rebels up as they responded with 4 consecutive goals to end the 2nd
with a 4-2 lead. Sam Miller opened the scoring on assists from Jay
Buchanan and Dan Francis. Evan Marroni added the second goal on
the power play with an assist from Tanner DeVries. Miller tallied
his second of the night with another helper from Jay Buchanan.
Corey Nightingale finished off the period with a goal on assists from
his linemates Evan Marroni and Brian Carrick.
The
3rd period was more of the same as Franklin added 5 more goals for a
final score of 9-2. Scoring goals for the Rebels were Corey
Nightingale (his second on the night), Jay Buchanan, Evan Marroni (also
his second), Ville Parkkinen, and Lucas Vargas. Lucas’ goal was
his first on the year. Assists on third period goals belonged to
Evan Marroni, Brian Carrick (two assists in the period), and Ryan Beane.
John
Negley notched his 4th win of the year stopping 24 of 26 shots.
Next up was Battle Ground Academy/Hume Fogg on Saturday, January 20th.
BGA entered the game with double the points in the standings as
Franklin. The game began as if BGA intended to run away with it
scoring on the first shift on the ice to go up 1-0. Penalties
played a big part in this game as the Rebels were whistled for 7
penalties compared to 2 for BGA. The 2nd BGA goal came on the
power play and the 1st period ended with BGA in front 2-0. The 2nd
period was scoreless and the 3rd was nearly scoreless as well. BGA
again capitalized on a Franklin player being in the box adding another
power play goal to go ahead 3-0. That was how the game ended.
John Negley was again superb in net stopping 28 of 31 BGA shots.
Franklin was not able to muster many shots of their own ending up with
16 for the game.
Finally, the Rebels faced Father Ryan on Monday, January 22nd.
Franklin came out ready to play and played perhaps their best period of
the year in the 1st period. Kyle Grider started the scoring with
his first goal of the year on a power play shot from the point that made
it through a maze of players and found the back of the net. After
a Father Ryan goal that evened the score, Corey Nightingale added
another power play goal with an assist from freshman Jordan Sabatini.
Franklin outshot Father Ryan 10-7 for the period. Unfortunately,
the 2nd period belonged to the Irish. Three consecutive goals gave
Father Ryan a 4-2 lead entering the 3rd period. Franklin began the
scoring in the 3rd with Lucas Vargas getting a goal with an assist from
fellow freshman Ryan Beane. Franklin couldn’t get any closer
than 4-3 though as Father Ryan added two late goals to end the scoring
at 6-3. The Rebels had a lot to feel good about however as John
Negley turned in another strong performance in goal stopping 29 of 35
shots and freshman tallied 4 of the 5 points in the game.
The Rebels have two games remaining in the regular season – Centennial
on January 31st and La Vergne on February 2nd. The game against La
Vergne will be senior night. Come out and support Franklin hockey
and help send out the 3 seniors in style on February 2nd. The puck
drops at 8:55 PM for the Centennial game and at 9:45 PM for senior night
against La Vergne. Both games are at Southern Ice.

Dec
1st - 8th
Blackman/Overton
Mt. Juliet
Hillwood
Game Notes |
Blackman/Overton
– On December 1st, Franklin faced the team from Blackman/Overton.
The game featured something not seen at a Franklin hockey game since the
2003/2004 season – someone other than John Negley in goal! John
underwent an emergency appendectomy on November 30th and did in fact
make it to the game, but naturally was not in goal. Backup CJ
Schipani started in goal for the Rebels and played well in his high
school hockey debut. Unfortunately, Franklin came up short in the
end losing by a final score of 6-4. Corey Nightingale scored 2
goals and added an assist while Evan Marroni and Ville Parkkinen also
scored for the Rebels. Evan Marroni also had 2 assists and Robert
Crockett pitched in with an assist as well.
The
following week Franklin played the first place Mt. Juliet/Wilson Central
team and the Bears were just too much for the Rebels winning by a final
of 9-1. CJ Schipani again started in goal and faced a barrage of
45 shots in the game. Evan Marroni scored the lone goal for
Franklin with Ville Parkkinen on the assist.
On
December 8th Franklin played perhaps the most exciting game in their
history winning 1-0 over Hillwood/Hillsboro on Dan Francis’ power play
goal with just 27 seconds left in the game. Dan’s effort capped
a mad scramble in front of the opponents net that had the crowd on their
feet screaming. Evan Marroni and Ville Parkkinen assisted on the
goal. The game was very even throughout with Franklin outshooting
Hillwood 22 to 21 for the game. John Negley came back from being
out of action with a huge effort in net. John was called on to
stop numerous scoring chances including two breakaways and several point
blank shots. After a rough start to their season, a huge win was
exactly what the Rebels were looking for and they got it in dramatic
fashion.

Ravenwood/MBA
Game Notes
|
The
Franklin High Ice Hockey team played two more tough opponents this past
weekend came out of the weekend with two more losses.
First up on Friday, November 17 was the defending GNASH champions
Ravenwood. The Rebels hung
tough with the Raptors through the first period falling behind by a
score of 1-0. The second
period was the difference however as Ravenwood outscored Franklin 4-1 to
go up 5-1. The third period was again won by Ravenwood 2 goals to 1.
The final score was 7-2. Goalie
John Negley was busy all night facing 40 shots and was named the
game’s MVP by the Ravenwood coach.
Corey Nightingale and Brian Carrick scored for the Rebels with
assists from Ville Parkkinen on Nightingale’s goal and Corey
Nightingale on Carrick’s goal.
The
following night Franklin faced a strong MBA team.
The game was much closer than the Ravenwood affair but in the end
MBA won by a score of 5-2. Brian
Carrick scored both goals for the Rebels.
Evan Marroni assisted on both goals and Corey Nightingale and
Ville Parkkinen both picked up an assist.
MBA out shot Franklin 12-4 in the 1st period as the
Rebels got off to a sluggish start.
The next two periods were much closer with the final shot count
ending at 24-15 in favor of MBA. One of the highlights of the game was the penalty count with
only 8 penalties in total being called.
Brian Carrick continued his point streak with at least a point in
each game this season.
Franklin
heads into the Thanksgiving break with a record of 1-4.
The schedule has not been kind to Franklin so far.
4 of the 5 teams they have faced are undefeated and the overall
record of the 5 teams is 15-4-1. The
Rebels return to action on Friday, December 1st at 5:10 PM
against Blackman/Overton at Southern Ice.

10 - Hendersonville
Game Notes |
The
Franklin High Rebel Hockey Team rebounded from a bad loss on November
3rd with two strong outings this past weekend. In the first game,
Franklin lost a tight game to Hendersonville 4-3. Hendersonville
finished 2nd in 2005-2006 and figures to have another strong season this
year. The Rebels started the game off slowly taking nearly 5
minutes to record their first shot on goal. However, Franklin
picked up the intensity in the second half of the first period and tied
the game at 1 on Brian Carrick’s power play goal with 13.9 seconds
remaining in the period. Evan Marroni’s first goal of the season
put Franklin ahead 2-1 early in the second. Hendersonville came
back to tie and then go ahead 3-2 with just over 4 minutes to play in
the second period. Evan Marroni scored to knot things up at 3 with
3 minutes left in the period. Hendersonville scored the winning
goal with just 13.4 seconds to play in the second period while short
handed. The third period was shortened due to the game running
long and neither team could manage any goals allowing Hendersonville to
escape with a 4-3 victory. In addition to his 2 goals, Evan
Marroni also had an assist while Brian Carrick tallied 2 assists and
Ville Parkkinen added an assist.

Pope John Paul Game Notes
|
The
Franklin High School Rebels got off to a rocky start in the 2006/2007
season.
Facing a vastly
improved and deep John Paul II team, the Rebels suffered a loss in their
first outing, falling 10-1 to the Knights.
JPII appears to be a team that could very easily
finish in the top tier of the GNASH standings by the end of the season.
The
Rebels had a difficult time getting any shots off against the Knights,
finishing with only 7 for the game.
Goalie John Negley was tested early and often – eventually
facing 38 shots for the game. Junior
Brian Carrick scored the lone goal for the Rebels with an unassisted
blast from beyond the blue line.
The
Rebels return to the ice this Friday evening, November 10th at 6:40 PM
against Hendersonville in what should be another stern test.
Hendersonville opened the season with an 8-1 beating of FRA/CPA.
Franklin will then play FRA/CPA Saturday evening, November 11th
at 8:55 PM. Come on out to
Southern Ice for both games and support the Rebels.

The
Rebel Review - Issue 2
by Bryan Bruce - Staff Writer
As the start of the
Franklin Rebels hockey season draws closer the team prepares themselves
for an interesting year. "It's going to be a tough year, but I
expect a season better than the last", says Captain Evan Marroni.
Last season the team struggled through a short-lived playoff run. This
year's squad should produce more wins and a better chance during the
playoffs.
This years team is
loaded with tons of speed, resulting in lack of size among the players,
but this should have no effect on the young and talented Rebels. The
Rebels may be a breakout team this year with hidden talent. The first
line consists of Evan Marroni, jujniors Corey Nightingale and Brian
Carrick, and foreign exchange talent Ville Parkkinen. You might
also want to look out for freshman Kyle Grider who joins the team with
high expectations to excel. Last seasons loss of spectacular talent,
Senior Morgan Muirhead should also bare no effects on the team. I
fanything this tremendous loss could help the players come together more
as a team and make everyone work that much harder.
New responsibilities
are thrown around this season as Marroni takes over the Captain duties.
Marroni enjoys being captain and says it's a lot of fun. Being in charge
of conditioning practices, being the middle man at any necessary moment,
and simply taking over as a leader are among the new duties of this
Rebel veteran. In post grad plans Marroni could very possibly take his
hockey to the next level by playing while in college. He could play for
UT at the club level and he'll at least try to stay in touch with his
hockey skills wherever he goes.
First year coaches Bob
Nightingale and John Negley, Sr. take over this year in hopes of showing
what they can do. Nightingale can be a pretty vocal guy and serves as an
interesting coach with pas experiences of getting kicked out of games
for this very reason. Negley sr. brings lots of intensity with his
coaching techniques and can be very tough with conditioning.
Who really knows what
to expect from a team so young? We can only hope for a successful season
out of our young squad. Only three seniors are on the team this year
which could leave us with a lack of experience. No matter what the
season's outcome, look forward to another exciting year of Rebel hockey. |
